Residual | Installed at PAVED Arts | 2010
Residual is a multimedia installation where Phillips uses experimental darkroom techniques to manipulate footage of abandoned farmhouses, shacks, and churches. The several projections accompanied by multi-channel sounds transform the desolate prairie into an almost apocalyptic, rubble of the world wasteland. Declining physicality occurs also in the medium, as Phillips includes her own process as part of the work. The roughened textures, scratch marks and chemical spills are a deliberate move to contradict the slick production in contemporary media. Residual invites the viewer to re-experience forgotten prairie dwellings as our own haunted, soulless spaces.
Revival | Installed at Ace Art | 2009
In REVIVAL, Phillips takes her well-known layered dreamlike style to another level, making use of a full palette of sounds. Words half-heard, momentary silences, sounds of technology and rhythmic repetition create a hypnotic, entrancing soundscape to echo extensively hand processed found film footage. Viewers look up at the hovering body of helicopter that is by turns a vehicle for redemptive rescue or a harbinger of something ominous. REVIVAL is a spiritual search that gives us an inkling of our ultimate destination.
